Understanding TV Bracket Types

Not all TV mounts are created equal. Here's everything you need to know about each type to make an informed decision.

Flat TV Bracket

Flat Bracket

Sleek & Close to Wall

Flat brackets are designed for one primary purpose: to position your TV as close to the wall as possible. Highly recommended for tile installations and for those who prioritize aesthetics over functionality.

Ultra-Slim Profile
Positions TV as close to the wall as possible (~1 inch gap)
Perfect for Tile
Ideal for tile wall installations - looks amazing
Maximum Security
Firmly anchored for safety
All TV Sizes
Works for all TV sizes and weights
Important Considerations:
Leaves minimal space behind TV for cables. Difficult to remove TV once mounted. Limited airflow can restrict heat dissipation for high-performance TVs.
Dom's Pro Tip:
Check the horizontal length of the wall plate! Some cheap flat mounts won't reach studs that are 24 inches apart (common in newer Colorado builds).
Tilting TV Bracket
⭐ MOST POPULAR

Tilting Bracket

Most Popular Choice ⭐

Tilting brackets are the most common choice for most installations. Allows the TV to tilt UP and DOWN while providing easy access to cables behind the TV. When in doubt, this is the best all-around option for nearly all installations.

Best All-Around
Recommended for most installations
Tilt Up & Down
Adjust viewing angle to reduce glare
Easy Cable Access
Provides space behind TV for cables (2-3 inches)
Versatile
Works great for higher wall placements
Perfect For:
TVs mounted above eye level, eliminating window glare, over fireplaces (standard height), and when you need regular access to cables. Fits all sizes up to 100 inches.
Dom's Pro Tip:
When you tilt a heavy 85-inch TV downward, you increase the "pull-out" force on the top lag bolts. High-end tilting mounts have "post-install leveling" screws that allow adjustments after mounting—cheap mounts don't. One wrong drill bit angle means a crooked TV forever.
Full Motion TV Bracket

Full Motion Bracket

Maximum Flexibility

Need your TV to be viewable from any angle? This is the mount for you. Ultra high-quality bracket suitable for TVs up to 98 inches. You can tilt the TV up, down, left, right, and extend it 16 inches off the wall. Ideal for those who want maximum flexibility and functionality.

Total Flexibility
Tilt up, down, left, and right
16" Extension
Extends 16 inches off the wall
Up to 98" TVs
Handles large screens with ease
Premium Quality
Ultra high-quality construction
Important Limitations:
Not recommended for TVs over 75 inches (they don't really need to be moved)
Requires wood studs - Cannot mount full motion on a wall without studs
Metal studs: Can work in apartments, but highly recommended NOT to if TV is over 65 inches
• TVs under 55" can use single arm; larger TVs need dual arm
Quality Matters:
Not all full motions are built the same. There are very cheap versions and very expensive ones. The bracket MUST be rated for your TV size, or it will fail over time.
Dom's Pro Tip:
When a full-motion arm is extended 20+ inches from the wall, a 60lb TV can exert over 200 lbs of torque force on the wall anchors. This is why you NEVER use drywall anchors for full-motion mounts. Over time, cheap mounts will develop "arm sag" where joints loosen and the TV tilts when extended.
Mantel Mount TV Bracket

Mantel Mount

Perfect for Fireplaces

Want to mount over a fireplace but don't want the TV too high? Mantel mounts are the perfect solution. Brings the TV down to a better viewing angle when you need it. Installation includes 2 technicians regardless of TV size.

Fireplace Solution
Mount over fireplace without sacrificing viewing angle
Pull-Down Design
Bring TV down to comfortable height
2 Technicians Included
Professional installation team
Premium Solution
Engineered specifically for above-fireplace mounting
Perfect For:
Anyone who wants their TV above the fireplace but doesn't want neck strain. The mount allows you to pull the TV down to eye level when watching, then push it back up when not in use for a clean look.

What DIYers Don't Know

Lesser-known facts about TV mounting that professionals know—and why they matter for your installation.

The "Heat Trap" Risk

Fixed/Flat Brackets

Because fixed mounts sit so close to the wall (often < 1 inch), they can restrict airflow. Modern OLEDs and high-performance TVs generate significant heat from the back panel. Without that 1-2 inch "breathing room" found in other mounts, you can actually shorten the lifespan of your TV's internal components.

The VESA "Wall Plate" Trap

Fixed/Flat Brackets

Some cheap fixed mounts have very narrow wall plates. If your wall studs are 24 inches apart (common in newer Colorado builds) instead of the standard 16 inches, a cheap fixed mount won't even reach both studs. Always check the horizontal length of the wall plate before purchasing.

The "False Security" of Physics

Tilting Brackets

A tilting mount doesn't just change the view; it changes the center of gravity. When you tilt a heavy 85-inch TV downward, you are increasing the "pull-out" force on the top lag bolts. If you aren't perfectly centered in a stud, that extra leverage is what causes the mount to fail months after installation.

The "Post-Install Leveling" Secret

Tilting Brackets

High-end tilting mounts (like Sanus or Chief) often have "post-install leveling" screws. This allows an expert to adjust the TV by a few millimeters after it's already on the wall. Cheap mounts don't have this—if your drill bit slipped 1/8th of an inch, your TV is crooked forever.

The "Torque" Factor

Full Motion Brackets

When a full-motion arm is extended 20+ inches from the wall, the weight of the TV is multiplied by the distance (Torque). A 60lb TV can exert over 200 lbs of force on the wall anchors when fully extended. This is why you never use drywall anchors for full-motion mounts; they are stud-only installations.

The "Arm Sag" Phenomenon

Full Motion Brackets

Over time, the joints in cheaper articulating mounts will loosen due to gravity, causing the TV to look "tilted" or "sagging" when extended. Professional-grade mounts use tension-adjustable hex bolts at the pivot points so you can "tighten" the arm as it ages. Cheap mounts can't be adjusted.

Cable "Pinch Points"

Full Motion Brackets

Most people forget that as the arm folds back, it acts like a pair of scissors. If the cables aren't "dressed" with enough slack and specialized ties, the mount will eventually crimp or cut the HDMI cables inside the arm mechanism. This is why professional installation matters.

Never Use No-Stud Brackets for Large TVs

Critical Safety Warning

Never use "No-Stud" / Nail-in Brackets for Large TVs. While they claim to work, they rely on the sheer strength of the drywall paper. For anything over 40 lbs, it's a massive liability. These mounts are dangerous and will eventually fail—often catastrophically.

Why Professional Installation Matters

Most people pick a mount based on price or features, but they don't realize that improper installation is the #1 cause of mount failures. These technical details are what separate a secure, long-lasting installation from a disaster waiting to happen.
